GARCIA MATEO, ROGELIO - PAG. 763-783

Abstract

The dominant opinion is that the university studies of the Saint of Loyola did not have an important influence in the development of his spirituality; on the contrary, the present article emphasizes, starting from the academic curriculum, especially at the University of Paris, that basic elements of Ignatian thought, such as intuition, purpose, discernment, choice, etc. coincide fundamentally with the Aristotelian themes of his studies. Moreover, in a second part, we investigate how Descartes, a pupil of the Jesuits for eight years, acquired not only knowledge of the philosophical-scientific subjects that were taught in La Fleche, but also of the spiritual formation that was given to the students. It is surprising that questions, such as meditation, cogito, doubt, certainty, evil spirit, characteristic of Cartesian thought, are also found in the Ignatian Exercises. The influence of the Ignatius of Loyola on Descartes has recently been also recognized in The Cambridge Descartes Lexicon, ed. by Lawrence Nolan, Cambridge University Press, 2016.

Keywords: Teleology, election, meditation, certainty, evil spirit
