Fifty Years of Papal and Related Miscellany

Over the past century, the Archivum Historiae Pontificiae has published
some 345 articles, 121 notes, five in memoriam, and three symposia containing
eighteen articles, and one conspectus. In keeping with the vision
set for the journal by Father Pedro de Leturia and its first editors, most
of these articles and notes have treated the institution of the papacy and
individual popes, their officials, and activities in specific periods and the
journal has provided an impressive annual bibliography of scholarship
on the papacy1. This special issue of the Archivum surveys these in five
eras. Thirty articles, however, are of a more general nature that span periods
or focus on ideas and institutions related to the papacy. This article
will review those devoted to the papacy itself and its Roman institutions,
most notably the Archivum Secretum Vaticanum and the Bibliotheca
Apostolica Vaticana. Also reviewed are publications on archives outside
Rome containing documents related to the papacy. Numerous are the
review essays that place a recent book in its historiographical context
and evaluate its contribution to scholarship on the papacy. Studies celebrating
anniversaries have surveyed the years leading up to them. Some
articles are talks given on such occasions. They are all solid contributions
to the broad field of papal history.
